A historic opportunity for Stuttgart
The Stuttgart - Ulm rail project is a unique opportunity for the city of Stuttgart to develop new districts right in the heart of the city. Compared with many other cities, where new residential areas can only be created in the surrounding suburbs, the vacated site which currently houses the railway tracks means that Stuttgart has scope for growth in the inner city. Roughly 100 hectares of site will become available for urban development in Stuttgart city centre. 50 hectares will be used as residential and working areas, around 20 hectares will be used to extend the existing parks, and another
10 hectares are earmarked for green spaces, public areas and streets.
Over the course of the next two decades, these new districts will become filled with life as jobs and housing are created. There are plans to create approx. 20,000 jobs and 11,000 apartments. A further advantage is that the rail tracks will run underground in future, so that the districts in the north and east of Stuttgart can become integrated once again.
