City of Stuttgart

Partner of the Stuttgart – Ulm rail project

Located in the heart of Europe, Stuttgart is the centre of one of the strongest economic regions and most innovative high-tech locations in Europe.
Stuttgart, which is also the capital of the Federal Land of Baden-Württemberg, can also offer a high quality of life and is well known for its varied cultural amenities and first-class international sports events.

Connection to the Magistrale for Europe

The Stuttgart – Ulm rail project provides Stuttgart with a unique opportunity. The new heart of Europe sets the course for connecting the city and the surrounding region to the European high-speed network, the “Magistrale for Europe”, linking up Stuttgart to the 1382-kilometre long rail network which runs between the European metropolises of Paris, Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna and Budapest.

Improving regional rail transport

The project will also significantly improve regional rail transport. Thousands of commuters from the Greater Stuttgart Area will be able to reach their destinations more quickly and conveniently in future thanks to the new through station, which will be far more efficient than its predecessor. The city centre will also have a direct link to the new station and the airport and the high-speed line to Ulm. The historic station with its striking passenger building, tower and arcade will be kept as part of the new ensemble.

Relief for the environment and the roads

When trains take people to their destinations faster and more comfortably in future, this will shift traffic from road to rail, providing relief for the environment and the roads.

New urban development prospects

The project also offers outstanding prospects for urban development: a whole new district will be created on a site where railway tracks currently split the city in two. Right in the centre of Stuttgart, a new area will be created for more greenery, new housing and jobs. This will make Stuttgart an even more attractive place to live and a greener city: new park areas equivalent to the size of around 30 football pitches will improve the quality of the air in the city.

We are facing a unique opportunity that we have to seize:

for better train connections, more climate protection, a better quality of life, more jobs and the chance of a better future for ourselves and our children.
