Construction logistics

A tailor-made concept

Restructuring the Stuttgart rail node will involve the transportation of a total of eight million cubic metres of spoil and 1.5 million cubic metres of concrete for construction of the tunnel linings, stations and engineering structures. These figures clearly show that the project places high demands on construction logistics and transport. Enormous quantities of construction materials have to be delivered to the sites, while excavation, demolition and tunnel excavation materials have to be disposed of. To ensure optimum and cost-effective work flows in Stuttgart and to keep dirt, noise and traffic disruptions to a minimum, a tailor-made construction logistics concept has been drawn up for the project. It breaks down into the following logistics areas: Central, Neckar and Filder.

Central transhipment point at Nordbahnhof

The logistics concept for Central Stuttgart is geared primarily to rail transport. The focal point is a central logistics site at Nordbahnhof: bulk goods can be delivered by rail to the station and waste material removed. The various construction sites in the city centre will be linked to the central logistics site by a purpose-built logistics road. That and other internal logistics roads will avoid additional congestion on the busy roads in the city centre. Additional logistics sites will be set up in the Europa district, along what is now Cannstatter Strasse and immediately next to the construction sites. Cannstatter Strasse will be closed to public traffic and the additional space gained from that measure will be used, amongst other things, as an access road to the construction sites. The freight trains cannot be routed direct to the construction sites in the A1 area, as the station throat is already working at full capacity so that any further traffic would obstruct rail passenger traffic.

Central Stuttgart

In the city centre (Central construction logistics area), the planning engineers have opted for a combination of conveyor plant, internal logistics roads and existing rail network. A central construction logistics site will be set up at Nordbahnhof (Sector C2), which will also be used for planning approval sections 1.2 (Filder Tunnel), 1.5 (Feuerbach, Bad-Cannstatt links, S-Bahn link) and 1.6 (Ober-and Untertürkheim link / stabling sidings). Up to ten freight trains can be dispatched here, carrying materials to and from the construction sites.
