In December 2001, the city of Stuttgart purchased the A2 - D sites from Deutsche Bahn AG. Over the next 20 years, new urban districts will gradually evolve in Sectors A2 - C. Schlossgarten and Rosenstein parks will be accessible from all sides. In contrast to the Europa district (Sector A1), these sites are still required for railway operations and can consequently be developed only on completion of the new central station, Hauptbahnhof. An exception to this is the C1 zone, which can already be developed. According to the regional plan, railway tracks will remain in Sector D (Gäubahntrasse).
