The “green lungs” of Stuttgart

The rail network was extended into Stuttgart city centre in the mid-19th century. Large areas of Rosenstein and Schlossgarten parks were used for the tracks, splitting the city centre in two. “The Stuttgart-Ulm rail project” will provide a unique opportunity to reverse these measures. Schlossgarten and Rosenstein parks will be enlarged by 20 hectares and accessible from all sides. Rosenstein park and the new Rosenstein quarter will be directly linked to each other, creating a new recreational area and new “green lungs” for the valley basin in which Stuttgart lies.

Environmental surveys

The rail engineering and urban development plans for the project require numerous environmental surveys, involving highly diverse methods ranging from computer-aided model calculations and simulations, experiments on a scale model in a wind tunnel, right through to measurements, drilling, mapping and nature observation in the construction site itself and the surrounding area.

The environmental department of the city of Stuttgart has published the original expert opinions in a series of booklets about the urban climate entitled “Stadtklima 21”.
